Blu-Ray FAQ's

My brand new blu-ray disc doesn’t play properly. Why is that?

Blu-ray discs and players make use of the latest advances in audio and video technology in order to provide the best possible sound and picture at home. This means that film studios and distributors will use the latest software to encode blu-ray discs, in order to provide you, with the best high definition experience possible.

In order to stay up to date with these advances in high definition technology, blu-ray players make use of upgradable firmware, which allows your player to read and transmit the information found on new and future-release blu-ray discs. If you don’t have the latest update installed, your player may not be able to accurately read and decode the information on certain discs, resulting in skipping, freezing or, in some cases, an inability to recognise your newly purchased blu-ray disc.

How do I upgrade my blu-ray player’s firmware?

Upgrading the firmware on your blu-ray player is usually a very simple process, but will differ between manufacturers. We advise reading your player’s documentation or manual, or visiting the “Support/Downloads” section manufacturer’s website. Almost all blu-ray players can be connected to the internet using a LAN cable or wireless network adapter and, once a connection has been established, will inform you of a newly available update. Again, we advise checking with your player’s documentation to determine if and how your player will connect online.

Most manufacturers release firmware updates every 4-6 months, but this again varies for each manufacturer.

Please note that new blu-ray players are also subject to firmware updates.

I have updated my blu-ray player’s firmware, but my disc still doesn’t play properly. Can I return it?

Absolutely! If, after updating to the latest firmware available for your blu-ray player, your newly purchased disc still does not play as intended, then we will be happy to exchange it. For more information on this, please see our Returns & Exchanges page.
