Cleaver Lever

The Growl are here and with only a handful of shows under their collective belts they've earned a reputation as the act to see. At their One Movement showcase The Growl caught the ear of Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill who later raved about the band on his show 2010 and played the unmastered version of their track '3,6,9'. "I wandered past one bar and I heard this sound coming from inside and I went 'Ooh what's this happening?' It really caught my ear. I went inside and I'm really glad I did because inside I saw that band and they're called The Growl" - Richard Kingsmill, Triple J. In their spare time the Growl have been squirreled away working on their debut EP 'Cleaver Lever'. Their basement-birthed recordings are littered with a cacophony of out of tune guitars, resuscitated pianos and broken cymbals. Their rehearsal room come recording studio is cluttered like a junkyard. Pieces of guttering, smashed shakers, pots, pans, destroyed drums, a plethora of old synths and tape machines are piled against the walls. It's dark, dingy and claustrophobic but it's been the birthplace of a collection of mighty tunes that will blow you away. The sounds are rough and raw but when coupled with front man Cam Avery's unmistakeable deep holler the sharp edges are seductively smoothed off and rounded out.
