Thomas is sent to the mainland to collect special wood for the new search and rescue station. As there is no room on the boat, Thomas must be pulled behind on a small barge. Unfortunately, the chain breaks and Thomas is lost at sea. He finds himself on far away Misty Island. There he meets the three "logging locos": Dash and Bash, the mischievous twins, and Ferdinand, the gentle giant. They try to help Thomas get home. Meanwhile, all of the engines are searching for Thomas with the help of the lifeboat Captain.
