By late 1944, the Western Allies were infected with the over-confidence that flowed from the sweeping victories they had gained since the Breakout from Normandy and that by December had carried them to the very borders of the Third Reich. They were confident that the war would soon be over, but they were sadly mistaken. On December 16, German forces launched a massive attack through the Ardennes, the opening blows of Operation Watch on the Rhine, known to history as the Battle of the Bulge.
Disc 1
The Siegfried Line
Called the Westwall by the Germans, The Siegfried Line was a defense system that stretched nearly 400 miles from the Netherlands in the North to Switzerland in the South. The campaign to breach the line included some of the most frustrating and deadly battles fought by he US Army in Northwest Europe.
Battle Of The Bulge
On December 16, 1944, thrifty German divisions roared across an Allied front that stretched from southern Belgium to the middle of Luxembourg. The attack came as a total surprise to the Allies and evolved into the most costly battle American soldiers have ever fought, in which nearly 80,000 were killed, maimed or captured in a hellish teat of courage and endurance.
Tigers On The Loose
The 10th Armored Division was the first of the American Third Army Division to enter Germany and the first to capture a major German City. Tigers on the Loose recounts the combat story of the 10th Armored Division in WWII, with emphasis on events related to fighting around Metz and Bastogne.
Disc 2
The Battle At St. Vith
During the Battle of the Bulge, two of the most important localities were Bastogne and St. Vith, with their roads nets, which, if held, would disrupt the plan of any aggressor. The Battle of St. Vith documents the gallant defense of the city by elements of the 106th Division and CCB, 7th Armored Division.
Bastogne
During the Battle of the Bulge, the 101st Airborne was rushed forward by truck to defend the vital road junction of Bastogne. They set up a defensive perimeter around the town, dug in, and for more than a week, repelled everything the germans threw at them.
The Bridge At Remagen
By March 1945, WWII in Europe was ending as Nazi Germany disintegrated. The Allies had advanced their broad front to the final barrier shielding the heart of the Reich, the Rhine River. With the Wehrmacht in full retreat, the Germans had demolished every crossing over the Rhine save one: the Ludendorff railway bridge at Remagen.
