Clara, a beautiful young girl is visiting St Petersburg with her family when she discovers a toy shop, and inside the shop window, a small nutcracker with a tear in his eye. Perhaps I can explain says the owner', and he begins to tell Clara the story of how a spoiled young Prince became trapped inside a nutcracker by a magic spell. The owner, a magician himself and also the Prince's uncle, persuades her to embark on a journey to find the Magic Nut which, will release the young Prince from the spell.
