Modigliani's passionate life is also an existence that is filled with struggle at every turn. Reckless and tormented, he is faced with derision and bigotry. A Jew, he has fathered a child with a beautiful catholic girl, Jeanne, whose father bitterly opposes their match. In art, he battles for recognition with none other than Pablo Picasso. Desperate for respectability, he enters Paris' annual art competition, as does his rival Picasso.
