The Mamiya family are seeking a husband for their daughter, Noriko. But Noriko, played by the extraordinary Setsuko Hara, is a modern woman and has ideas of her own. She is not particularly enthusiastic about marryingeven mocking her married friendsbut, when her brother proposes a potential suitor, she impulsively chooses a local widower. This simultaneously delights and disappoints her family, and affects each of their lives tremendously. Early Summer is one of Yasujiro Ozu's more complex works, a subtly-nuanced, at times comedic examination of the changes in all our livesand stands as a loose prelude to his masterpiece Tokyo Story.
