Journey to Horseshoe Bend is a musical interpretation of T.G.H. Strehlow's autobiographical novel of the same name. It tells of his journey down the Finke River Valley of Central Australia where the ancient landscapes of the Aranda people and European pastoral holdings co-exist. Fascinating narratives of Australian history, fusing European and Aboriginal traditions, unfold as a spiritual voyage of discovery.
Journey to Horseshoe Bend tells the story of Pastor Carl Strehlow's final journey through the Finke River in 1922 as seen through the eyes of Theo, his 14-year-old son who later achieved renown as the anthropologist, T.G.H. Strehlow. As his father, the German missionary from the Hermannsburg Mission, lies dying and battles with his faith, Theo is awakened to the mythical significance of the Aranda landscapes by his guide, Njitiaka. T.G.H. Strehlow wrote Journey to Horseshoe Bend in 1966 at the age of 59.
