Most of Purcell's musical output consisted of music for the Royal Court and Church. His odes, anthems and welcome songs are among the most beautiful of English music. He also wrote many overtures, dances and songs for the theatre but only 6 full length works for the stage: Dioclesian, Dido and Aeneas, The Fairy Queen, The Tempest, Indian Queen and King Arthur. Of these, only Dido was a full opera, in which the story was told in song. The others, including The Fairy Queen, have been described as Semi-Operas, where the story is acted out in between the arias and choruses.
The Fairy Queen is based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the characters in Purcell's work include Titania, Helena, Oberon, Puck and Bottom, disguises, mistaken identities, jealous spouses as well as dreams and magic potions.
