One of the defining composers of modern times, Philip Glass returns to Australia for 3 nights at Melbourne’s Art Centre. Each night Glass and his ensemble will be performing one of Glass’s acclaimed scores for the Quatsi Trilogy, an acclaimed series of films made by Geoffrey Reggio. They will be performing as an accompaniment to screenings of the actual films.
Nonesuch has two of these classic soundtracks available now. ‘Powaqqatsi ’ is the second in the trilogy, and it highlights the impact of technological progress on native cultures. Over six months, Reggio and his crew journeyed to twelve countries, including India, Egypt, Brazil, Peru, Kenya, Nepal and Nigeria capturing ordinary people at work and play and revealing their complicated relationship with such new additions to their lives as cars and high-rise buildings. Like all the films in the trilogy, it is a series of raw images, with no narrative structure, meaning the soundtrack plays a very important part.
