This monograph is devoted to Joel Faivre-Chalon (1953-2020), French creator of contemporary jewellery. Trained in Strasbourg and subsequently based in Montpellier, Joel Faivre-Chalon never viewed jewellery as mere ornament: his pieces are the fruit of patient research conducted into form (which, in his hands, tends to be pared down), technique, and materials.
His work can be imagined in two broad phases: the first devoted to experiments with colour, followed by a second focused on studying volume, drawing on innovative materials such as titanium, slate, laminate, or carbon fibre.
To mark a major donation by Faivre-Chalon's wife to the Musee du Bijou contemporain in Cagnessur-Mer in 2025 and the subsequent exhibition, a selection of his pieces is presented in detail in this catalogue. Various authors examine his work from different, and in some cases personal, perspectives; this is complemented by testimonials from various colleagues and an exhibition biography. The publication thus provides an overview of Faivre-Chalon's work whilst highlighting what contemporary jewellery owes to the artist's unique creations and experiments.
