This Handbook explores Japanese architecture and the built environment from diverse disciplinary and methodological perspectives, tracing the influences that have shaped modern Japanese architecture and urbanism.

Divided into four thematic parts - translations, materializations, meditations and characterizations – the Handbook takes the reader on a stroll through developments of Japanese architecture and the transnational exchanges that have shaped conceptions and production of Japanese architecture. It examines translations of domestic and international ideas and evolving building cultures. The book also considers the media through which Japanese architecture is formulated and disseminated, and the discursive constructions that operate in dialogue with built constructions.
