Growing up on a quiet river in Maine, surrounded by his loving family, a young loon has always felt safe and at home. But when he becomes separated one day and can't find his way back, he must venture out into the wider world-where he quickly discovers that not everyone is as welcoming as he had hoped.

Hurt and confused when he is turned away by two other loons when he asks for directions, the young loon encounters a wise great heron who sets him back on the right path. A sudden storm, however, forces him to look for cover, where he encounters the loons who had shunned him before. Should he help them? His mind says no, but his heart tells him something else.
