Situated on the Bedford Basin outside of the city limits of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Africville was the first free Black community in North America during the post-enslavement era. The community thrived despite racism and the many challenges posed by Haligonians and the Canadian government. Despite protests, the subsequent displacement and destruction of Africville resulted in irreversible harm to Africvillians and their descendants.
