The MC/rapper from Houston, Texas, has established his firm position by skillfully fusing hip-hop and cinematic R&B, creating a unique soundscape that completely engulfs the listener.
From his debut album "HEAVEN OR HELL" in 2020 to "LIFE OF A DON" (2021), "LOVE SICK" (2023), and "HARDCORE PSYCHO" (2024), Don Toliver has achieved the remarkable feat of sending every album he has released to the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. This latest work, "OCTANE," is his fifth album overall. Released digitally earlier, this album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling over 162,000 copies in its first week—a new personal record—and achieving an astonishing 423 million global streams in its first week, already becoming a massive hit.
'OCTANE' is a powerful and immersive work rooted in Don Toliver's signature melodic and psychedelic trap R&B. Executive produced by Toliver himself, the album is built on carefully selected, euphoric, and unexpected samples, along with rich, cinematic production, created in collaboration with his longtime collaborator, Derek "206DEREK" Anderson. Furthermore, Travis Scott participates as producer and featured artist, while Aaron Paris, Bnyx, and Sean Monberger are among the producers credited on the album. Recorded in a variety of settings, from Carmel-by-the-Sea and Los Angeles to Mount Wilson during his European tour, this album draws heavily on Toliver's deep love for cars and rally racing culture. "Independence," "moving forward," and "the thrill of driving" are the driving forces behind the image and spirit of 'OCTANE,' which is positioned as a soundtrack that colors creativity, freedom, and the journey of life that follows.
This album also marks a major creative turning point for Don Toliver. He produced three tracks himself: "ATM," "Rendezvous," and "Call Back," and the album also includes two viral hits that reached the US Top 20, "E85" and "Body," as well as the lead single "Tiramisu." The visuals further enhance the world of the album, with Maxim Cowarin (who has worked with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Miley Cyrus, etc.) directing the music video for "ATM," and Shadlinsky directing "Call Back." Incidentally, Don Toliver's collaborations with film scores have been expanding year by year, including participation in the Grammy-nominated film "F1" and the Academy Award-nominated film "The Criminals," as well as providing music for the film "SCREAM 7."
Don Toliver is also scheduled to come to Japan this October as a special guest for Post Malone's "BIG ASS World Tour." As he himself commented, "It's not the future or the past, it's here and now," and this latest chapter, "OCTANE," resonates as the ultimate soundtrack that colors the adventure of "this very moment."
