The Bulleid Pacifics of BR's former Southern Region have always generated great interest. Some were in service right up to 1967, when steam operations ended in the south of England, often running in a deplorable state of repair. But with their eventual demise, interest only strengthened. Over thirty of these locomotives still exist in preservation today in one form or another, with some returning to steam on heritage lines, and even to the main line where they have now gained a whole new following of enthusiasts. AUTHOR: Mark Pike's fascination with Bulleid Pacifics was instilled in him at the age of 5, when his father took him to Poole station (Dorset) at the very end of steam workings in 1967. Later in life he worked on the railway as a leading trackman. The memories of these fine locomotives have never faded, thanks largely to the fantastic efforts of preservationists.
