Mary is struggling with her memory. She does not have too few recollections but too many. Some are quite alarming, but she has been assured by her friends that they can't be true. But they are so detailed, so exact, that Mary feels these events must have taken place.

In an effort to make sense of these memories, Mary recounts her childhood growing up in York with her three friends. It is the Blair Years, tensions arise over the Iraq War and they gradually find themselves out of their depth in the protest movement. As they get older, they all follow very different paths but Mary remains in the north of England, all the while questioning what is real, both in history and her own life, and what her memory has conjured.
