The 1830s: a period of unprecedented violence in American history outside of war. Ethnic and religious conflicts raged in the streets, party henchmen rioted at the ballot box, and assault and murder were commonplace. A young Abraham Lincoln observed that “outrages committed by mobs form the every-day news of the times.”
The primary targets of this mob violence were abolitionists and Black citizens who challenged the foundation of the U.S. economy: slavery. Figures like William Lloyd Garrison and James Forten spearheaded the anti-slavery movement, attracting both followers and enemies. Even in the North, abolitionists faced intense hatred from newspaper publishers, businessmen, and politicians who sought to suppress, silence, or even execute them.
Mobs wielding bricks, torches, guns, and knives unleashed chaos, forcing the abolition movement to confront critical questions: Could nonviolence succeed against arson and attempted murder? Could its leaders maintain unity, or would internal divisions prevail? Could it endure and inspire future generations of activists?
J.D. Dickey unveils the stories of the Black and white men and women who persevered, demanding freedom and liberty for all citizens. Their sacrifices and strategies paved the way for future social movements and set the stage for the nation’s journey toward war and emancipation in this turbulent era.
