When I moved to Rotterdam in 2005, Mark Du Mosch became my new neighbor, or rather, a new friend. We were fellow DJs and both disco enthusiasts. Thus began our journey of sharing good records with each other. Together, we visited numerous record stores and flea markets, often cruising through thrift stores in Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, and Brussels, in search of unknown or well-known funky, spacey, and spicy vinyl. This was DJ food for our sets, of course, but for Mark, it also served as inspiration to bring back to his music studio. The same love he puts into finding spicy records is poured into his studio-his little laboratory where analog and modular magic happens. He takes an old-school, chemical approach to his production process, using vintage and modular machines, but he also records many sounds himself. A collection of percussion instruments, flutes, and unusual gadgets is set up next to his electronic freak show. Like in any lab, there is a risk of explosion here-huge explosions when dance floor bombs debut their first chorus. Mark has an exceptional ear for melodies and sneaky deep rhythms hidden beneath a pulsating groove-it could be techno, house, or disco. Everything builds up beautifully, and the development of his melodies is quite fascinating. He is not your typical techno producer who merely stimulates the dance floor. He adds a lot of atmosphere, and many of his tracks could just as easily work in a movie or documentary as they do in a party setting. His experience listening to ancient grooves, combined with his streetwise perspective, makes it authentic. It's very eclectic techno or very mechanical machine disco.
