In 1968, saxophonist Yusuf Mumin founded the Black Unity Trio alongside cellist Abdul Wadud and drummer Hasan Shahid. Together, they recorded Al-Fatihah, which has become one of the most sought-after free jazz albums and a cornerstone of the Cleveland scene. Long considered the only record of this legendary trio, it now finds a new echo with Journey to the Ancient, which unveils four previously unreleased tracks from Mumin's personal archives. These rare recordings reveal other facets of his experimental vision. He is heard on alto and tenor saxophone, flute, but also cello and vocals, in an opening piece dedicated to Abdul Wadud. Mumin presents himself under his own name, but also under the pseudonym Dan Nuby when he overlays double bass parts. The sessions, whose exact dates remain unknown, feature drummer William Holmes, a collaborator of Sonny Simmons, who provides a remarkable rhythmic anchor. Born Joseph W. Phillips in 1944, Mumin became a central figure in the Cleveland free jazz scene in the 1960s, marked by the spiritual influence of Yusef Lateef and by his collaborations with Norman Howard, Albert Ayler, then Wadud and Shahid. Remaining discreet after the Black Unity Trio adventure, he had only released a single digital album under his own name. Remastered by Colorsound Studio, Journey to the Ancient thus reveals one of the most overlooked talents in avant-garde jazz. The disc is accompanied by a two-page booklet signed by Mumin and critic Pierre Crépon, shedding new light on the rich history of free jazz in Cleveland.
