The sources collected in this volume are concerned with the roles of wild animals in different contexts of encounter and interaction and against the background of a broader reevaluation of wild(er)ness in American culture, literature, and art. Sources offer insights into the cultures of hunting in merican society, including American self-conceptions as a "hunting democracy", and the role of representations of wild animality for contemporary ideas about civilization, nationhood, and masculinity, among other aspects.
