Danish Volunteers of the Waffen-SS tells the story of Freikorps Danmark in pictures from 1941-1943. Freikorps Danmark was established as a Danish corps to fight communism and, from its beginning, was controlled from Denmark, being placed under the control of the SS-Division Totenkopf and 1. SS-Brigade during its service on the Eastern Front. It was a relatively small formation, which almost entirely consisted of Danish volunteers; during their time on the Eastern Front, they suffered heavy casualties. In 1943, the High Command of the Waffen-SS decided to disband Freikorps Danmark and the personnel had to transfer to a new German division, which was directly controlled by the Waffen-SS. The source material for this book has been gathered from the photo collections of former members of the unit and includes a large number of previously unpublished images. AUTHORS: Jens is 57 years old and lives in Aarhus, Jutland. He has four grown-up children and a grandchild. He had a family member who joined the Waffen-SS in 1943 and was reported missing in Russia in 1944. For the past 20 years, he has spent a lot of his spare time finding out what happened to him and other Danes who still were missing from the Second World War. As a result, he has met approximately 20 of the old volunteers. Lars is 35 years old and lives in Randers, Jutland with his wife and five-year-old son. He works as a bricklayer and his leisure interest is the Second World War - especially the Danes who fought for the Germans. He has known approximately 30 of the volunteers who fought for Adolf Hitler in the SS, but most of them have passed away due to old age. He also spends a lot of his time at the Danish Archives, where he searches for information covering the period 1940-1945. 550 b/w photos, maps
