The San Francisco Bay Area has a dynamic architectural scene with buildings and spaces reflecting a mix of geographical, cultural, technological, and ecological influences. The works of early generations of architects such as Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, William Wurster, Joseph Esherick, and William Turnbull, as well as the landscape architecture of Thomas Church have set a precedent for the contemporary architecture that continues to shape the built environment of the Bay Area. Like their predecessors', the works of today's local architects show great respect and deference for the region's geographical qualities, climate, topography, and culture, resulting in remarkable spaces sensibly connected with their environment.
