Instrumental music and opera developed in the 1600's, along with Venice Baroque being developed in between the same period until the 1800's. In Venice, the opera season corresponds to the Carnevale, which is the weeks that precede Lent, that continues to this day. It's been a social event when Venice held international meetings to discuss trade, banking, and war with the Turks. A side note is that Antonio Vivaldi taught his music trade to an orphanage in Venice at the Ospedale della Pietà. Originally it was a convent as a hospice for the needy. The Venetian nuns, called the Consorelle di Santa Maria dell'Umiltà, established the institution in the fourteenth century.
