Pianist Helio Alves generates a special flare and excitement whether playing the music of his native Brazil or straight-ahead jazz. As a follow-up to his first Reservoir release, "Trios" (RES #156), which featured him in both spheres, "Portrait in Black And White" focuses on the straight-ahead. Accompanied by bassist Santi Debriano, and drummer Matt Wilson, Alves presents a balanced mix of originals (listen to the opener "Frenzy" for some no nonsense, virtuoso piano playing) and standards which include an exciting, edgy transformation of "Angel Eyes," and Jobim's "Portrait in Black And White." Steve Swallow's composition "Falling Grace" deserves special mention with the pianist embarking on a graceful, imaginative flight of improvisational mastery.
