Get ready to kick some Flash.
A football player and his friends travel to the planet Mongo and find themselves fighting the tyranny of Ming the Merciless to save Earth.
Review of Flash Gordon by Christopher Pattison
Cult-classic films from the 1980’s are kind of my specialty. I am a huge fan of a lot of cult-classic titles from the 1980s period of Hollywood and ‘Flash Gordon’ is one of my favourites. Based on the popular tv show of the same name, ‘Flash Gordon’ follows our titular hero of the same name, played by the wonderful Sam Jones. Sam Jones plays football player ‘Flash Gordon’ as he travels to the Planet Mongo and finds himself fighting the villainous Ming to save Planet Earth. The film is drenched in 1980’s b-movie goodness and topped off with a killer soundtrack from Queen. So how does ‘Flash Gordon’ hold up?
As a fan of Sam Jones and the ‘Flash Gordon’ legacy, I was very excited for the re-release of the 1980 b-movie classic and boy did it not disappoint. Whilst some of the film's effects are dated, the cheesy tone and fun science-fiction premise, not to mention the film is drenched in 1980’s nostalgia, make this one still a gem of the 1980’s. Sam Jones as Flash Gordon is over-the-top and hammy, but that is what makes the character so unique. He is really loveable in the role and I don’t think any other actor could do this character the justice Sam Jones has done. My hat goes off to you sir. The film uses practical effects and great sets that still are quite impressive to this day. Whilst the Blu-Ray release does allow you to see more of the film's flaws, the sets still remain to be one of my favourite aspects of the film. Ming is also a great advisory for Flash as well, he is an iconic villain. Played by the late, great Max Von Sydow, who does a great job as the villainous Ming the Merciless. I love Ming as a villain, and I think he still stands the test of time as a villainous presence.
‘Flash Gordon’ has its flaws, but at its core it is a well-made, fun, 1980’s Science-fiction adventure. Anchored by a fun and goofy performances from Sam Jones as Flash Gordon. This new Blu-ray restoration is truly stunning, with the colours and sound really standing out. This is easily the best Flash has ever looked. I am giving this 4K UHD release of ‘Flash Gordon’ a 7/10. This is definitely one worth picking up, buy this ‘classics remastered’ edition of ‘Flash Gordon’ on Blu-Ray and 4K UHD today!
