James Blunt Once Upon A Mind Vinyl

After flirting with electronica on his last album, James Blunt returns to what he does best on new album ‘Once Upon A Mind’, writing classic songs that touch both the heart and the head. The album’s first taste arrives in the shape of the breezy, ‘Cold’, an effervescent modern spin on love.

There’s a freshness that resonates throughout the eleven new songs that make up ‘Once Upon A Mind’, his 6th album, released October 25th on Atlantic Records.  A UK tour for early 2020 will be announced shortly.

On the new album, James has worked with a variety of producers including Steve Robson, Jimmy Hogarth and TMS. Highlights are many and include the poignant ballad ‘Monsters’, the pop swagger of ‘5 Miles’ and the country tinged ‘Halfway.’ There’s a warmth that permeates the entire album, and a real sense of personality.

“I think this is the most honest album I have ever made.” James Blunt says.  “Back To Bedlam was similar in that I had been writing those songs for a while about my life experiences at that time, and they came together on my debut.  And every song on this album represents something that I’m currently going through or have recently experienced. It’s a very personal record, and I’m proud I can share it.”

James Blunt released that classic first album, ‘Back To Bedlam’, in the autumn of 2004 and soon after the single ‘You’re Beautiful’ became a global smash hit. He has sold over 23 million albums and has showcased his wit and charm more recently with his always engaging twitter account.

Review of James Blunt - Once Upon A Mind by Thomas Bleach

‘Once Upon A Mind’ is Jame Blunt’s sixth studio album, and after flirting with synths on ‘The Afterlove’, he’s returned to his roots and delivered a indie-pop record full of heart and honesty. In retrospect, this record creates the same sort of impact that ‘Same Kind Of Trouble’ made, when he tried to re-create the success of ‘Back To Bedlam’. It’s strong and enjoyable, but it’s still not as good as his debut effort, and that’s okay. Opening with the polished folk-pop track ‘The Truth’ he reproaches his roots and creates a commercialised sound that has seen ‘Cold’ warmly embraced on radio. Adding in a bit of electronic influences, ‘5 Miles’ is a song that also has a lot of potential within the current musical climate. But if you step outside the “in-trends”, there are some genuinely impressive songs that could actually bring Bunt back into the spotlight even more. ‘Halfway’ is a standout track that reflects on needing to be “all in” with love and it’s a simply beautiful and honest track that will have you swaying along immediately. “Cause it’s there or it’s not, it’s heartbreak of it’s love. There’s no such thing as halfway” he sings during the catchy hook. ‘Champions’ is a track that is reminiscent to imagine Dragons recent material and could easily be a hit on radio while ‘Youngster’ is packed with attitude and hears him confessing that there are new kids that he is competing against like Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran, but he’s learnt that he just needs to be himself. And throughout ‘Once Upon A Mind’ Blunt is unapologetically himself in the best way. This collection of tracks is very him and if you’ve ever been a fan of his music, then you will really enjoy the depths he dives into for this record.
