Angus Stone's funky side project is BACK!!
Dope Lemon comes out firing with the second full-length album, 'Smooth Big Cat'
Review of Dope Lemon - Smooth Big Cat by Thomas Bleach
Continuing to showcase his chilled out experimentation, Angus Stone dives into a psychedelic folk dream on the new Dope Lemon record. ‘Smooth Big Cat’ is an ambitious record that falls into the DIY and experimental side of his artistry. Using this side project to show listeners a different side of him, Stone isn't afraid to reach outside of the box.
This record is a unique journey that explores the life of a fictional character that lives on the property where Angus live and recorded this album. The ‘Smooth Big Cat’ who resembles this character, portrays someone who doesn't spend his time worrying about the world and is just present in the current moment.
The whole album embodies that dreamy energy and delivers ten songs of chilled out folk driven alt-rock. None of these songs are as instantly catchy as ‘Uptown Folks’ or ‘Marinade’ but lead single ‘Hey You’ comes quite close. Other stand outs include ‘Salt & Pepper’, ‘Give Me Honey’ and title track ‘Smooth Big Cat’.
Instead of focusing on radio play he delivers a prominent aesthetic that drifts from the very start of the record all the way to the end. It’s an interesting and unique listen which won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but will perfectly suit his laid back live show his bring to Splendour In The Grass next week and around the country in August.
