Review of Meghan Trainor - Treat Myself by Thomas Bleach
After receiving a lot of release set backs over the past year, Meghan Trainor’s third studio album ‘Treat Myself’ is finally out in the world in it’s shiny, experimental-pop glory. The fifteen track record is her strongest collection yet and hears her honing her sound in a mature and cohesive way. Sonically it takes the foundations that her sophomore record ‘Thank You’ set and layers a lot of growth within an impressive synth lead structure that feels fresh and captivating. Within every song there is a slight production twist that you may have not seen coming, or a really strong direction that drives the vision to really stand out as something fresh and different for her. It still stays in that confident lane that ‘Thank You’ introduced and builds on top of that sonic to give a sound that is slick and funky. Opening track ‘Wave’ featuring Mark Sabath begins as a somber piano ballad that hears her soulfully singing about her commitment to a love that is destined to end with gospel inspired harmonies intertwined. But as she reaches the chorus a rhythmic synth beat drops and it takes you into this deep-house experimental world. ‘Babygirl’ and ‘Ashes’ continue this sound in their own way and instantly become favourites along with the immediately funky ‘Nice To Meet Ya’ feat Nicki Minaj, ‘Funk’, ‘Lie To Me’, ‘No Excuses’ and ‘Blink’ which have similar sonics to her ‘Thank You’ era. Trainor first rose to fame because of her soulfully driven sonic that captured emotion and honesty, and on this record she rediscovers those roots with the doo-woop love anthem ‘Here To Stay’ and the power ballad ‘After You’ with AJ Mitchell, but the song that really stands out is ‘Workin’ On It’ featuring Lennon Stella and Sasha Sloan. This self-love anthem is a striped back moment that hears the three singer-songwriter’s confessing that it’s not always easy to feel confident because of the way social media has made us compare our lives to each other. But what they can all admit is that they are working on feeling better about themselves, and that’s a beautiful thing. Another song that stands out for a completely different reason is the sassily confident ‘Genetics’ which hears her teaming up with The Pussycat Dolls for their epic comeback. This song is pure fun and will see you not being able to wipe a smile from your face from start to finish. The lyrics are confident and the production is fierce and will have you wanting to vogue your way across the dance floor. The whole album is a bold affair of emotions and experimentation, and hears Meghan Trainor re-introducing herself to listeners with a new found maturity as an artist.
