Hundred Acres

Bon Iver collaborator and singer-songwriter S. Carey has announced details of his third full-length album, his follow-up to 2014’s ‘Range of Light’. More direct than ever, there is a wellspring of confidence in this new batch of songs from S. Carey that lays bare the intricacies of life while keeping its ideas uncomplicated. Carey’s easy, almost laid back approach speaks of confidence and clarity of vision.
He was trained in jazz and it lends itself to the skillful presentation on this release.
Written over the course of a few years, in between touring schedules and the growth of his family, Carey recorded, mixed and produced ‘Hundred Acres’ at home and in various studios in rural Wisconsin with support from his longtime collaborators.

It’s set to see him at his most mature, grounded and confident, using more instrumentation including guitars, synths, pedal steels, strings and percussion while also placing his vocals at the forefront.
Recorded at April Base in Wisconsin, it features backing vocals from Gordi on three tracks as well as contributions from Sufjan Stevens collaborator Casey Foubert and strings arrangements from Rob Moose (yMusic). By giving equal status to the indifference of nature and the concerns of a material world - while employing more pop-oriented structures instead of the Steve Reich or Talk Talk-ian repetitions of his past work - a new balance is struck that creates something unique.
