For the South Sydney faithful, this was the moment they had been dreaming about … for more than four decades, a shot at the NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final. The Rabbitohs had been through so much. They were rebuilt from the ground up following their re-entry into the NRL competition in 2002. They struggled to make an impact. But in recent years the Redfern side had begun to assemble a formidable playing roster under coach Michael Maguire. They went close in 2012 and 2013, but 2014 would finally prove to be their year.

They had it all. An imposing pack of forwards led by the brute power of the Burgess brothers, the skills of Isaac Luke and the inspiration of skipper John Sutton. Behind them, the playmaking talents of Adam Reynolds and some of the brightest rookies in the game … Luke Keary, Alex Johnston, Dylan Walker and Kirisome Auva'a. Their youth was complemented by veteran winger, Lote Tuqiri – the oldest player in the game. And, of course, the icing on the cake … Greg Inglis, the premier fullback in the competition. The Rabbitohs were the benchmark for consistency all year. They racked up 15 wins as they quietly built momentum heading into the Finals campaign.

They began with a scintillating win over their 2013 Finals nemesis, the Sea Eagles, before defeating Premiers and arch-rivals the Roosters in the Preliminary Final. The Rabbitohs had booked their place in the Grand Final. They didn’t let their fans down. It was a stirring Grand Final triumph over a dangerous Bulldogs outfit that sent the Rabbitohs fans into raptures, delivering a record 21st first-grade Premiership to Redfern Oval.
