Born in Mississippi in 1915, McKinley Morganfield got the name Muddy Waters because he played in a creek as a boy. He grew up immersed in the Delta blues, and was first recorded by archivist Alan Lomax. In 1943 he moved to Chicago and started off in the studio as a session guitarist, before emerging as an artist in his own right.
