On July 3rd 2003 Doug Bruce found himself traveling on a New York subway near Coney Island. He had no idea who he was, where he lived or what country he was in. Struck by a rare and profound form of amnesia, a distraught Doug turned himself into the police and then the local hospital but doctors could offer no explanation nor predict when his memory would return. On that day, thirty seven years of his life experiences including all memories of family, friends were wiped out. Doug was reborn. Filmed over one year by Director and old friend Rupert Murray, Unknown White Male explores the events of that fateful day and follows Doug as he rediscovers the world around him. As he travels from his new life in America back to his home in Europe, to meet family and friends for the first time, to confront the past and discover his new self. A film that explores what it is like to have a second chance at life and the role that memory plays in making us who we are.
