Many of the new songs on 'When It Falls' are influenced by Sam and Henry’s experiences on the otherside of the pond, especially in the dusty American record shops. Sample ideas weren’t the only way the American tour influenced the album. West Coast Americana also had quite the effect on the band. The tour also created an opportunity to try out many of the new songs that would become the backbone of 'When it Falls'. They took the bones of these tunes to southern Spain and turned them into gossamer-gorgeous songs powered by hip-hop soul, 70s jazz-funk and a perfectly-pitched line in understatement. Realizing what they had, they set out to redefine and perfect the sound that easily identifies Zero 7. Judging from the opening track 'Warm Sound', the influences, production time and redefinition came together perfectly.

New vocalist Tina Dico appears on the dark and sparse 'Home', which has cross-eyed melodies and lullaby bass. Sia Furler and Sophie Barker both reappear adding smoked soul to the grainy folk-tinged 'Somersault', Mozez takes flight on the beautiful, mildly deranged 'Over Our Heads' while 'Look Up' is up-tempo, drive-out-of-town instrumental bliss. The track 'In Time' has succeeded Zero 7 in creating a standout gorgeous pop moment. There is a darkness and a confidence in 'When It Falls', elevating it to the highest level of new-generation British music.
