Serge Gainsbourg was an was a one-off, a totally unique performer / songwriter who was more French than a full-bodied Bordeaux or the most aromatic Gitane. Gainsbourg was more controversial, more daring and outrageous than any other European artist of the 1960's right up to his death in the early 1990's.
