No one can deny the impact that Cathy Freeman has had on Australian sport. Her influence on your women across Australia is quite remarkable. She changed the game and has remained a role model for young indigenous women everywhere. In 2021, sports fans have been treated to a documentary breaking down the event of her winning gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Today I am going to discuss this documentary and why it is a great tribute to the Australian icon.
As mentioned, Cathy Freeman is one of Australia’s most iconic figures. Her win at the 2000 Olympics, inspired a generation. Everyone can remember where they were when she crossed the finish line and the reaction from the Australian public showed just how much this win meant for the country. The documentary explores exactly that, how a singular moment can impact a country in such a way and what it is like watching that ripple effect across the country. Looking at how this can affect the person who has made it happen as well, is an interesting prospect and now with the benefit of hindsight, Cathy explores exactly that.
The documentary captures this moment in a profound way, showcasing exactly what this can mean for someone and how it can change their life as well. Freeman has had an exceptional career post this event as well, involving herself in indigenous communities and providing inspiration for future generations and aspiring young women. Looking at this event in this documentary with Freeman has provided clarity and because of Freeman’s down to earth nature, it felt like I was exploring this monumental event with a friend. The documentary captures Cathy’s essence in a realistic and grounded way.
Freeman was an absolute delight to watch, it captures this amazing sporting moment in a fantastic way, with new insights provided from Freeman herself. I loved this documentary and would recommend it to all Australians.
