Twenty One Pilots have always revelled in a world of experimentation, and with each album they’ve created an immersive world of storylines and emotions that their fans have adapted into their lives. With ‘Scaled & Icy’ the dynamic duo have returned to a sonical palette that could be found somewhere in-between ‘Vessel’ and ‘Blurryface’. It’s a punchy collection of eleven songs that finds a positive heart within the chaos of the last year. Encouraging listeners to dance and celebrate, the songs aren’t as emotionally heavy as in the past which is a direct response to the heaviness that we all felt in our lives last year thanks to the COVID pandemic.
Creating an escapism from the opening moments of ‘Good Day’, you will find yourself dancing and jumping around ecstatically to these energetically charged songs. ‘Saturday’ is a disco influenced party anthem that I’m ready to hear on heavy rotation over the next year, while ‘Mulberry Street’ is a funky song to soundtrack a sunny afternoon. All of these songs have a strong live instrumentation to them which will have you impatiently ready to hear them in an arena sometime soon.
This is truly an album of positive escapism, so get ready to dance and sing out loud at the top of your lung in the car or your bedroom.
