For over 15 years now, ‘Supernatural’ has dominated the small screen, becoming an icon in popular culture. The Winchester brother's journey literally to hell and back has been suspenseful, dramatic, and downright fun. The show has been a rating juggernaut for the CW and has remained their flagship through many ups and downs. I have had such a great time with the show and am sad that it has come to an end. But on the plus side, now that the complete collection is available on DVD, you are able to relive all the great sequences from the show’s history. However, the finale was met with some criticisms by fans. With such a lead-up to such a monumental moment in the show, was it ever going to live up to the expectation of the fans? I am here to shed some light, giving my opinion on the show’s finale, don’t worry this will remain spoiler-free as I discuss the show's legacy, tie-up, and potential for future installments set in this universe.
As I mentioned, the show's finale was the subject of many online discussions. With many fans left feeling a little empty. Like every finale, there are built-up expectations by the fans. Every fan has their own expectation of how they wish the show to end but very rarely does a finale live up to this pent-up expectation. Me personally, I was left feeling satisfied with the ending. The final episode titled ‘Carry On’ was the 327thepisode of the show. That means that there were 326 episodes building to this very moment. The episode concludes the journeys of the characters in a satisfying manner, using its 42-minute runtime effectively, spending time with the characters that have made the show as memorable as it is.
Audiences were treated to a trip up nostalgia lane, with our characters weary from their journey. Sam and Dean Winchester have literally been to hell and back and their journeys have seen them grow as people, the Dean and Sam we have in this finale are a different Dean and San that was introduced in the Pilot. Keeping this in mind and the 326 episodes of lore that has been established, it is an impossible foot to conclude the show by touching on every journey the characters been on, to reference everyone that they have met on these journeys, and to properly send off the characters in a way that concludes the many arcs they have had. Instead, the show spends moments with these characters to look back at the journey rather than reference every moment in the journey. The finale respects that those watching the finale have been along for the ride, that they understand what these characters have been through, and understand that this is where they have ended up. And in a way, that is the finale needed to be. It feels like a nice bow on the show from the pilot to where we ended up.
With the established lore, the show leaves on a note where we could realistically explore further journeys within this universe. I don’t mean we need to see further adventures with Sam and Dean Winchester, but other characters, other urban legends, other supernatural elements could really lend themselves to another adventure in this universe. There is so much, so much lore that has been established, there are honestly endless possibilities and because of that, I would love to see what they could do.
‘Supernatural’ has had an incredible run and like all good things, it must come to an end and I can honestly say as a fan of the show, I have enjoyed the ride and enjoy where we have ended up. The show was respectful to its audience and it was a blast right up until the end. It is not my favourite tv finale, but I think it represents the show perfectly.
