After a near 20-year hiatus from the big screen, Neo returned with a bang with 2021’s ‘the Matrix: Resurrections’. Following the Hollywood trend, the film acts as a soft-reboot of the previous films, acknowledging the events of the films, but pathing a new way for possible sequels and a jump-start to the popular franchise. The film once again stars Keanu Reeves as everyone’s favourite badass Neo and follows Neo back in the real world after nearly 20 years. I don’t want to spoil anything here, so you just need to see it for yourself. With the film releasing next week, I am here today to tell you why you need to add it to your collection. So, without further ado, here are 3 reasons why you need to pick-up ‘The Matrix: Resurrections’.
The cast and characters – After so many years absent, there was a big question mark as to whether the cast of the Matrix still have it. In short, yes, yes they do. Keanu reeves proves once again that even in his late 50s, he is still one of the biggest and best action stars on the planet. He sells all the action still, still doing a lot of his own stunts. Carrie-Ann Moss doesn’t disappoint as well, giving a great performance, showing that she still ahs the chops and can still keep up with Keanu. We have a new Morpheus this time played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. He is really good, playing a youthful version of the character. Channelling his inner Laurence Fishburne. Fans of the original will not be disappointed with this performance. Jonathan Groff also joins the cast as a new iteration of ‘Smith’. I am a huge fan of Groff’s work, with his biggest credit being Mindhunter. Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris also round out the cast as two new characters ‘Bugs’ and ‘The Analyst’. The cast are all great and a huge reason why this late sequel/soft-reboot works so well!
The action – One of the best elements of the original film was of course the epic kung-fu style action set pieces. Fans of the original trilogy will not be disappointed, with director Lana Wachowski doing an awesome job here, updating the action with some fun set pieces that rival some of the best moments from the original trilogy. I love how the film looks, with very clean and gorgeously shot action. The film knows just exactly how to frame these set pieces, allowing for the action to breathe and for it to feel natural in the world that’s been re-established. It looks amazing on 4K UHD as well by the way.
The story – The story was an element that many fans including myself were nervous about with this new film. It seemed like the original trilogy was wrapped up near perfectly. However, you will be delighted to know that this new entry in the series, tells a wholly original story, re-hashing some of the original trilogy’s themes and plot devices but updating them, to give a meta quality that is incredibly weird, but also satisfying.. I don’t want to spoil any of the plot elements, so all I can say is go and watch it for yourself and be swept away down the rabbit hole once again to the world of ‘The Matrix’.
‘The Matrix: Resurrections’ was a sequel absolutely no one asked for, but boy am I glad Warner Bros. decided to reach into their archives and make this one. Populated with great performances, a fun premise and gripping action, the film is an improvement over the second and third instalments, adding a meta edge to the films that hasn’t been previously seen. Be sure to head down to your local Sanity or online to pick-up a copy of the film on DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K UHD today!
