Scream 2022 - 3 Reasons to Buy it!

Another franchise that he been on hiatus for over 10 years, the horror/comedy satire franchise ‘Scream’ is back yet again with another instalment, this time directed by Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelle-Opin and Tyler Gillett, who previously helmed the 2019 horror/comedy ‘Ready or Not’. After the passing of the late, great horror mystro and ‘Scream’ film series co-creator, Wes Craven, passed away, it was unclear if the franchise was going to continue. After a pitch from the Radio Silence duo to Paramount, it was clearly announced that a fifth instalment would be making its way to cinemas in 2022 and in January we finally got it! To celebrate the films DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD release, I am going to give you the 3 reasons why you need to add this one to your collection. So without further ado, here are the 3 reasons why you need to pick-up ‘Scream’ (2022) today, and don’t worry, absolutely no spoilers ahead.

The ensemble cast – One of the strongest elements of the ‘Scream’ franchise has been the impressive ensemble casts it has always manage to attract. This 2022 sequel or ‘reboot-quel’ is no different. The film stars our original trio played by David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox with newcomers Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Melissa Barrera, Mikey Maddison and Mason Gooding. This new cast are great, drawing a close comparison to the original quadrilogy of films. I love the dynamic, feeling very reminiscent to the original film but updated to incorporate modern technology. Blending the new with the old was a great idea too, as the characters all have some great on-screen chemistry with one another. I really adored how the cast all blended together.

The tonal balance of horror and comedy – One of the hallmarks in the ‘Scream’ franchise is how the comedy and horror elements blend with one another. Bringing on board the radio silence duo was a great decision. The two have such a great understanding of how to do this. Their 2019 film ‘Ready or Not’ did this seamlessly, providing the audience with some genuine belly-laughs whilst also keeping them in suspense for the entire runtime. Scream does this as well, with plenty of twists and turns keeping the audience in the dark of what’s to come next. The meta humour addressing the current landscape of the horror genre also provides genuine laughs for fans of the genre. Jack Quaid’s incredibly energetic performance is also a blast, providing quite a few moments of levity among the more serious and suspenseful moments of the film. Its needless to say that the blend of horror and comedy here is incredibly balanced.

The meta commentary on the current landscape of the horror genre – As touched upon, the meta commentary on the genre is a hallmark of a good ‘Scream’ film. I really love how the film addresses the genre as a whole and how the franchise has remained interesting without ever succumbing to the genre tropes and cliches that the film pokes fun at. There is a great sequence in the film where the characters sit down and discuss the modern horror-genre, poking fun at the reboot-quels, which of course ‘Scream’ 2022 is. This scene breaks down the current tropes, what films we’re seeing in the genre at present, and how to survive a modern horror film in 2022. It is great, and I think is one of the films strongest elements.

‘Scream’ 2022 is an absolute blast. Blending the old with the new and pathing a new path for the franchise to continue after this entry. I would love to see a Scream 6 through 20 if there are enough legs left in the franchise. The cast are all great and the horror elements remain fresh and inventive as ever. A must-watch for fans of the franchise and horror fans in general. Be sure to head down to your local Sanity or online to pick-up a copy of the film on DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K UHD today!
