Nosferatu (2025) Movie Review
Director Robert Eggers has become one of the most formidable talents behind the camera working in Hollywood today. He burst onto the scene with his feature debut in 2016 with ‘The Witch’, to great acclaim. He followed this up with 2019’s ‘The Lighthouse', again to great critical acclaim and then again in 2022 with his film ‘The Northman’. He has become one of the best filmmakers out there at the moment, directing quality films and creating some of the most memorable and visceral imagery of the last 20 years of cinema. It had been long rumoured that Robert Eggers would be remaking Nosferatu, but due to conflicting schedules with the cast, the film looked to be shelved, but thankfully, momentum picked up post COVID-19 and thankfully on 1 January 2025, Nosferatu arrived on the big-screen.
Like Eggers previous films, Nosferatu also impressed critics, receiving an impressive certified fresh rating of 84% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 73% audience score, grossing more than $181 million at the worldwide box office. The film has an impressive cast of Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Emma Corrin and is a gothic re-telling of the classic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in his wake. Nosferatu quickly became one of my most anticipated films of the year due to its impressive cast and Robert Eggers behind the camera, and I’m pleased to say, it did not disappoint.
Nosferatu is a visual masterpiece. The film is oozing with style, with some of the most beautiful shots I have seen on the big screen in quite some time. Robert Eggers re-teamed with his director of photography Jarin Blaschke who has worked with him on each of his previous feature films and was once again acknowledged for his work at the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars) this year with a nomination for best cinematography. Each frame of the film could be printed and placed on a wall as a piece of art. It’s stark, it’s gothic and its absolutely gorgeous, capturing 1700s Eastern Europe in a beautiful, albeit spooky light. Eggers also understands what’s scary about Nosferatu. It’s a story we’ve seen told many times before, with various adaptations of Dracula and of course the 1979 Werner Herzog remake of Nosferatu, but he manages to make this film still feel fresh, haunting and ultimately terrifying. Its memorable in a way Dracula and vampires hasn’t been for quite some time.
The other strengths here lie in the amazing cast. For starters, we have Nicholas Hoult continuing his hot streak with films like Renfield (another Vampire film), The Order, Juror #2, The Great and The Menu, with yet another great lead turn as Thomas Hutter, showcasing his ability to lead these larger-than-life genre pieces. Lily-Rose Depp as our lead Ellen Hutter, is also incredible, having to give a very physical performance here, going to places a lot of young actresses wouldn’t be able to. There’s a great scene of her possession later in the film, that is terrifying, haunting and memorable. It’s a performance for the ages. Willem Dafoe as the Van Helsing, Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz, he’s larger than life, giving a performance that only Willem Dafoe could. Emma Corrin and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are both excellent as well, rounding out the supporting cast, enduring a lot from a character perspective. The real highlight here though is Bill Skarsgård as Count Olak. He completely transforms here not just behind the make-up, but through his performance as well. He is terrifying with the first time we see him, Olak is completely in shadows, with his menacing voice emphasising his presence and power. It's an amazing performance.
Robert Eggers brings Nosferatu to life for the modern age. The film is oozing style, with every frame serving as its own individual piece of art. The costuming and sets, emphasises the cold, stark setting, creating atmosphere to spare. The cast are all terrific with Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård giving fantastic, dedicated performances. This is a must watch and must-own for film collectors. Be sure to secure your copy on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD from Sanity today, you won’t want to miss it.
