Marry Me Movie Review

Over the last decade, we have seen a gradual decline in the number of Romantic Comedies released into cinemas. The decline on the big screen has been apparent and the genre has found a new home on streaming services. Whilst it's fun to see some of these films at home, for me, nothing beats the experience of watching a film on the big screen and then picking it up on physical media then after. In 2022 we have seen new life breathed into the genre we thought was gone and buried, with 'Marry Me'. 'Marry Me' stars Owen Wilson as Charlie, a single parent looking for love, when he finds it in the most unexpected place, a concert. Here Charlie meets pop sensation Kat as they marry each other on stage in front of thousands of adoring fans. The two then get to know one another and find that they may be suitable for one another after all. I wasn't overly keen on watching this title as I am not the biggest fan of the genre, but I actually found 'Marry Me' to be endlessly watchable and incredibly charming.

The film is hinged on the chemistry between our two leads, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez. The two are great with one another. You really buy into their relationship and their feelings for one another. The supporting cast are a lot of fun as well, with the likes of Jonathan Bradley and Sarah Silvermen, among others rounding out the cast. The film doesn't fall into every cliche, rather using the cliches to re-acquaint the audience to the genre that has been absent from this level for quite some time. The film rather plays with the tropes making it feel natural for this world.

I also had a lot of fun with the premise of the film. Yes it borrows from other films in the genre such as 'Notting Hill' and yes it is very predictable, but because of the way the story plays out and because of the likeability of our two leads, the film feels fresh and never fails to entertain along the way. The best compliment I can give this film is that it is endlessly watchable. It is not going to win best picture at the Oscars, but it is certainly a crowd pleaser and will definitely appeal to a broad range of filmgoers. I had a blast.

'Marry Me' is smartly directed, well-acted and very charming. I had a blast watching this one and would recommend it to anyone after a harmless, fun time watching a movie. A must watch as well for rom-com genre fans who have been forgotten over recent years.
