Lorde - Solar Power Album Review

Stepping into the light, Lorde has addressed her darkness and found a warm positivity through her third studio album ‘Solar Power’. This body of work is a cleansing collection of tracks that acts as  the perfect soundtrack to a summers evening with the sunset playing the ideal backdrop. 

It’s a record all about finding your confidence and purpose while having your feet comfortably barefoot and interwoven with the ground. She wants the listener to feel connected with their thoughts as well as their physical surroundings instead of being so focused on social media and the life we live through our screens. 

Compared to her previous two albums, it’s sonically quite a polarising first listen. With breezy production led by acoustic guitar and smooth melodies, the New Zealand singer-songwriter is pulling references from the early 2000’s and the likes of Lana Del Rey with her delivery. ‘California’, ‘Big Star’ and ‘Mood Ring’ are immediate standouts, but it’s ‘Secrets From A Girl (Who’s Seen It All’ that will truly impress. The song even features a special spoken-word outro by pop royalty Robyn who acts as a flight attendant to a teenage Lorde who is navigating the emotional journey she’s about to embark on. 

If you purchase the disc-less music box you will receive a download of the exclusive deluxe edition of the album which features two extra songs not available on streaming, and shockingly they’re two of the best songs from the whole record. ‘Helen Of Troy’ and ‘Hold No Grudge’ are great lyrical representations of the in-between portal from ‘melodrama’ to ‘Solar power’ and for any long term fan they’re a MUST listen.
