HAMNET  Movie Review

Adapting the quiet devastation of Hamnet for the screen was never going to be easy, but the Director Chloe Zhao’s film version of Hamnet achieves something remarkable: it transforms a deeply internal, literary story into a cinematic meditation on love, grief, and the fragile threads that bind families together.

Set in the world of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his family, the film wisely focuses less on the mythology of the playwright and more on the emotional life of those around him, particularly Agnes (Jessie Buckley) and the children who anchor the story’s heart. The performances are restrained yet powerful, capturing the texture of everyday life in a way that makes the eventual tragedy feel devastatingly real.

For much of its runtime, Hamnet unfolds with patience and quiet observation. The cinematography lingers on nature, domestic day-to-day, and the small gestures between family members that communicate love without words. This gentle pacing allows the audience to fully inhabit the world before the story’s emotional weight arrives.

And then comes the third act.

The final stretch of Hamnet is nothing short of extraordinary. If you follow me on social media, you’ll have seen my profound reaction to the film’s final hour as Chloe Zhao delivers one of the most compelling and moving third acts in modern cinema. Without resorting to melodrama, the film builds an overwhelming emotional crescendo that explores grief not as spectacle, but as something deeply human and shared. The storytelling becomes almost poetic; weaving memory, loss, and art into a moment that reframes everything that came before it. It’s the period drama equivalent to watching Captain America  whack Thanos with Thor's hammer.

What makes this final act so powerful is its emotional honesty. It’s not content to just depict sorrow, rather it explores how sorrow transforms people and how creativity can become a vessel for mourning. In doing so, the film connects the personal tragedy at its centre with the enduring power of storytelling itself.

Hamnet feels less like a historical drama and more like a quiet masterpiece about the alchemy of loss and art. The final act is heart aching, profound, unforgettable & truly stands as one of the most moving conclusions a film has delivered in years.
