Gang Of Youths are Australian indie-rock royalty and they’re ready to prove yet again why they’ve gained that status. They’ve been super cryptic and secretive surrounding the release of their recent single ‘the angel of 8th ave’ and after a few slight hints they’ve surprise dropped a brand new EP on this fine Friday morning.
‘Total Serene’ is a three track collection that captures the cinematic and ethereal soundscape they’ve built up over the years. Lead single ‘the angel of 8th ave’ hears the band delivering their signature indie-rock sound with a big festival ready hook and punchy guitar riff. Citing Joy Division and New Order as key influences to their sound, this track also hears a Bruce Springsteen influence shining through with its 80’s rock polish. Steering down a different path on ‘asleep in the back’ they offer a light and sweeping string led ballad before changing it up again on ‘unison’. Cinematically building into a saxophone solo and a pop production fusion, there is a collective of different inspirations shining through that makes this particular track the EP’s clear highlight.
