Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025) Movie Review
One of the most enduring modern horror franchises is of course, the Final Destination franchise. Through the 2000s and early 2010’s, the franchise was rivalling the Saw and Paranormal Activity franchises as the most popular franchises out there, with the first five instalments making more than $655 million at the global box office. However, after the fifth one, the franchise stalled, entering a near 15-year hiatus before retuning in 2025 with Final Destination: Bloodlines. Bloodlines marks a return and is the sixth instalment in the iconic supernatural horror franchise, directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Steina and co-written by Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home). The film marked the strongest box office return to date, bringing in a monstrous $285 million at the worldwide box office, and still climbing! The film also struck a chord with critics and audiences alike, holding an impressive 93% critical rating and 87% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes respectively.
The film stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana as Stefani Reyes, a college student haunted by recurring nightmares of a catastrophic event that never happened—a collapse of the Sky View tower in her hometown of Cloverdale in 1969. After her grandmother's death, Stefani inherits chilling visions tied to a premonition that once saved lives decades ago. She returns home seeking answers and reconnects with her family, including her father Marty (played by Tinpo Lee) and younger brother Charlie (Teo Briones). As Stefani digs deeper into her family's past, she learns that Death is now targeting her bloodline, reigniting the franchise’s signature theme of fate and inevitability. With a solid premise and glorious on-screen kills, Death is back!
Final Destination: Bloodlines is a crowd-pleasing, bloody good time! As a big fan of the Final Destination franchise, I have been eagerly awaiting this instalment since its announcement in 2018. The film originally was meant to debut on streaming on HBO MAX or MAX and thankfully, it made its way to the big screen, because it deserved the big screen treatment. The film doesn’t stray too far away from the film’s formula. It’s simple, yet effective. As the film is serving as a soft reboot of the dormant horror franchise, it made sense to play it simple. And in that regard, the simple plot, works as an advantage to the film. The film emphasises extravagant death sequences, that play out like action movie set-pieces. They’re intricate, ridiculous but always fun and always bloody and gruesome. Creating new, elaborate death sequences, is something the franchise is known for, at this point, it’s in its DNA, it’s the identity of Final Destination and fans won’t be disappointed with this latest entry, because it delivers. The opening sequence of the film, the premonition, is up there with the bridge sequence from 5, as one of the best in the series.
The cast was also a lot of fun here, working as a great ensemble, making you care enough, so that when it’s time for a character to bite the dust, the outcome matters and you’re rooting for them to somehow survive, or to be brutally dispatched by death. Kaitlyn Santa enters the fray as a formidable scream queen and final girl as Juana. I thoroughly enjoyed her in the lead. She knows the tone of the franchise and has fun with the concept of this latest entry. Her paranoia and worn-down nature were a welcomed aspect to the long running franchise, and I had a lot of fun with her in the lead. We also get a final turn from horror icon, and franchise veteran Tony Todd, appearing once more as William John Bludworth. Sadly, Todd passed away in 2024, and this will be his final turn as the character, but this is a fitting end, with a lovely tribute to him at the end of the film. May he rest in peace.
Death is back! ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ doesn’t re-invent the wheel here, delivering a standard plot for a Final Destination film, but this film delivers exactly what fans want, long-winded, elaborate death sequences full of blood and gore. The cast are fun, the plot is simple, and the deaths are bloody and over-the-top. It was fun to see Death back on the big screen.
