Den Of Thieves 2 (2025) Movie Review
Gerard Butler has become one of Hollywood’s most reliable action stars of the 21st century, appearing in many films that have become modern day, action classics. Films like Rock n Rolla, Law Abiding Citizen, Gamer, Cop Shop, The Vanishing, the Has Fallen trilogy (Olympus, London and Angel), Greenland, Geostorm, Plane and of course 300. He has continued to bring these films to the masses, showcasing over and over again, his dedication for the action genre. In 2018, we got a surprise hit with Den Of Thieves. The film proved to be a success at the box office, bringing in $80 million at the worldwide box office off a $30 million budget. It was only a matter of time before we got a sequel, and thankfully in 2025, we did with Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera.
The sequel again proved to be a hit at the box office, bringing in just shy of $60 million at the worldwide box office, off a $40 million budget, with a third movie now in the works for 2027, after its success. The film once again follows Big Nick O’Brien (played by Butler) and Donnie Wilson (played by O’Shea Jackson Jr.), who is back on the hunt in Europe this time, embroiled in the treacherous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest exchange. The film harkens back to the action films of the 1990s, bringing back the fun and high-octane, popcorn/bubble-gum action.
Director Christian Gudegast returns as the director here for Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera, bringing back his signature style and clear love and admiration for 1980s and 1990s action films. He has fun with the absurd premise, channelling what has worked so well for the Fast and Furious franchise and making the most out of the great setting, and action heavy premise. There are some truly great sequences here, that I don’t want to spoil but action fans are not going to be disappointed. Gudgest has also been confirmed for returning for the third instalment, which will have franchise fans excited about his forthcoming return behind the camera!
Gerard Butler again turns a fun and energetic performance as Big Nick O’Brien, once again showing his ability to command any action film. He has a presence when he’s on-screen, where you do take notice of him and appreciate his action prowess. His chemistry with O’Shea Jackson Jr. is also fantastic. The two of them make for a great on-screen pairing, and one of the best in recent years. Their lively performances, keep the audience entertained and captivated throughout, with their witty banter and charm. The film is worth watching for the two of them alone. They’re both really great.
Overall, Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera isn’t going to win over the un-converted, but if you’re a fan of the first one, then you’re definitely going to want to check this one out. The beautiful Spanish backdrop makes for a unique setting, with the team really utilising the location for its action set-pieces. Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson jr. are both fantastic as well, providing audiences with a likeable action duo. Action genre fans will have a blast!
