Clown In a Cornfield Movie Review
In 1996, Scream re-invented the horror genre. After its meta take on the horror genre, we saw many imitators, with the film breathing fresh life into the genre. Similarly Scream (2022) has also had a similar effect on the Slasher genre. Since Scream's resurgence in 2022, we have received a number of slasher films, including Halloween: Ends, Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Scream VI, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), Totally Killer, Thanksgiving, It’s A Wonderful Knife, Bring it On: Cheer or Die, In A Violent Nature, Sick, X, Pearl, MaXXXine, Founders Day, Sissy, The Blackening, Timecut, Strangers: Chapter 1,Terrifier 2 and 3, Chucky Seasons 1 – 3, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and honey 1 & 2, The Mean One, Fear Street: Prom Queen, Heart Eyes, Until Dawn, Hell of A Summer and Clown In a Cornfield. Clown In a Cornfield (2025) is a slasher horror film directed by Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs Evil), based on the novel by Adam Cesare (that also has two sequels ‘Friendo Lives’ and ‘Church of Friendo’). The film’s concept had me a little sceptical, but Eli Craig’s involvement and the success of the books, had me cautiously optimistic. The film holds a certified fresh rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed an impressive $10.6 million ($7.3 domestic) against an estimated budget of $700, 000, which is really quite impressive.
The story unfolds very similarly to the books, in the small, divided town of Kettle Springs, Missouri, where tensions between the older generation and rebellious youth simmer beneath the surface. After the tragic death of her mother, Quinn Maybrook (played by Katie Douglas) moves to Kettle Springs with her father Glenn (Aaron Abrams), the town’s new doctor. Quinn quickly befriends a group of teens—Cole (Carson MacCormac), Janet, Matt, Ronnie, and Tucker—who are known for their prank videos and defiance of local norms. The town’s mascot, Frendo the Clown, once a symbol of prosperity tied to the now-defunct Baypen Corn Syrup factory, mysteriously reappears—this time as a murderous figure. As the town celebrates its 100th Founder's Day, chaos erupts when Frendo begins a killing spree, targeting the youth he sees as the "rotten crop" of the town. Like I said, I was cautiously optimistic heading into ‘Clown In a Cornfield’, but I left the cinema pleasantly surprised.
The film borrows a lot of key concepts from recent slasher films, with the setting of the small town feeling very much like ‘Thanksgiving’ and ‘It’s A Wonderful Knife’, it adds a fresh take on the small-town slasher setting, which I enjoyed. Unlike the two mentioned before, because Clown In a Cornfield is operating on a much smaller budget, it has this earnest quality to its presentation. The town feels very sleepy, and the environment feels very run-down and lived in. The concept of the factory burning down, creating angst amongst the town people, was also a nice touch, as you can feel the hardship and struggle, as a lot of these people are now out of a job. This is helped by Quinn’s character, played by Katie Douglas, arriving in the town, after living in a big city. The contrast works, as you can experience the change through her perspective.
The other strengths lie in Friendo. The design of the clown is nothing new, but it’s more how the clown is played. Without getting into spoilers, there are certain subtleties to the way friend is played based on the scenario and setting. These subtleties, given the reveal make it a lot of fun and the character of Friendo more unique. The kill set-pieces and death sequences were wholly unique as well. I think an unconditional fear we all have, is clowns. If you’re not afraid of clowns, you’re lying. So, seeing Friendo chase these characters through cornfields with weapons, embodying clown-like mannerisms, is a lot of fun and the movie is worth watching for those sequences alone.
‘Clown In a Cornfield’ doesn’t re-invent the wheel, but it remains fun and entertaining throughout its brisk 96-minute runtime. Director Eli Craig knows what works in the slasher sub-genre, and has fun with the absurd concept, and genre cliches we’ve become accustomed to. He gives a surprising amount of depth to his cast of characters, so when they’re getting picked off, the audience actually care. Again, this isn’t a groundbreaking flick, but if you’re in the mood for a fun slasher, this will scratch that itch.
