Amsterdam (2022) Movie Review

David O Russell has become one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hollywood. His resume extended over nearly 3 decades, with films such as ‘Three Kings’, ‘The Fighter’, ‘Silver Linings Playbooks’, ‘American Hustle’, ‘Joy’ and now 2022s ‘Amsterdam’. O Russell’s latest outing boasts yet another huge cast with the likes of John David Washington, Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, Taylor Swift, Timothy Olyphant, Chris Rock, Andrea Riseborough, Mike Myers, Zoe Saldana, Robert De Niro and Rami Malek. The film follows the inspired by true events story of three friends who witness a murder and are framed for it. As the plot progresses, they uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history. With one of the best casts assembled in recent years and David O Russell at the helm, I was incredibly excited to check this one out. So how was ‘Amsterdam’?

‘Amsterdam’ was insane, bonkers, every adjective possible that explains the crazy plot, this film was, but was still a lot of fun. David O Russell, has managed to create some of the most entertaining, and tonally interesting films in recent years. His blend of drama, crime, and comedy is admirable and continually keeps the audience entertained. Considering his films have a hefty runtime, they never feel like they overstay their welcome. He keeps the direction here innovative and exciting, moving the camera around and putting focus back on his incredible cast. O Russell really knows how to keep a story moving.

As mentioned, the cast here is fantastic. The real standouts are our three leads. Margot Robbie, Christian Bale and John David Washington all play off each other superbly. Their chemistry with one another is truly magnetic and the highlight of the film for me. They feel like real friends who have been swept up in this utterly insane situation. It’s a lot of fun to see them try and dig their way out of this issue, but also maintain their friendship along the way. The rest of the ensemble cast are all terrific as well. It was fun to see Mike Myers in a big screen feature film again, after taking the best part of 10 years off to focus on his family. It's great to see that he’s still got it. Saldana, Olyphant, Swift, De Niro and Rock are all terrific as well, rounding out the impressive cast.

Amsterdam is one of 2022s best flicks. It is funny, tense and utterly insane. If you are a fan of David O Russell’s previous outings, then this one is right up your alley, as it maintains his signature style. Amsterdam is now available on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD.
