A Working Man (2025) Movie Review

Over the past two decades, former Commonwealth Game’s diver turned actor Jason Statham (yes, he was a professional diver at the 1994 commonwealth games, google it), has proven himself to be one of the best action stars working today. His work ethic and body of work that reflects this is unparallel to any other action star working today, well aside from Liam Neeson of course. Some of Statham's Film credits include The Expendables 1 - 4‘Homefront’, ‘The Italian Job’, ‘the Bank Job’, ‘The Meg and The Meg 2: The Trench, ‘Hobbs & Shaw’, ‘The Transporter 1 - 3’, ‘The Mechanic’ and ‘The Mechanic: Resurrection’, ‘Parker’, ‘Safe’, ‘The Beekeeper’ and loads more. He always delivers in this genre, just give him a new occupation, and watch the man go to work.

When it was announced in 2021 that David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch, Sabotage, Fury,Suicide Squad, Bright, The Tax Collector) would be teaming up with Statham for an action flick, I was already on board. ‘The Beekeeper’ released in 2024 and was a massive success, taking in just shy of $163 million worldwide, with a sequel slated for release in 2026. Statham and Ayer had such a great time working together making this film, that he and Ayer both teamed up once again for another occupation/action film, with ‘A Working Man’ in 2025. The film was also a modest hit at the box office, taking in more than $88 million worldwide. A Working Man follows Levon Cade (played by Jason Statham), a former Royal Marine trying to live a quiet life in Chicago. When the daughter of his close friends is kidnapped by a violent Russian trafficking ring, Levon is forced to return to his deadly past. As he takes on the brutal syndicate to rescue the girl, he risks everything to protect the people he loves. As a fan of Statham, I couldn’t wait to see him re-team with Ayer for another throwback action flick and am happy to report, that it did not disappoint!

Jason Statham once again here, shows why he is one of the best action stars of the modern age. He sells the physicality of every single set-piece, bringing his trademark machismo to every frame. He’s not going to win an Oscar for his work here, but he’s so reliable as the action lead. The supporting cast are also fun here, my personal favourite is his buddy, ex-military friend, Gunny Lefferty, played by the great David harbour. He is always fun to see on-screen and his interplay with Statham and his daughter here is fantastic. I really enjoyed him.

David Ayer also knows what he’s doing behind the camera. There isn’t anything particularly special about his direction, but the way he helms the action is fast and brutal, and given the subject matter being dealt with in the film, the brutality is satisfying and well-worth the build-up. He lets the action breath, avoiding close-up, shaky camera sequences, for wide-angled shots, so we can see what’s happening and as an audience feel every bone-crunching punch, kick and pile-drive. I hope by the end of their collaborations together, we have nearly revery occupation covered from Beekeeper to Marine Biologist. I will watch endless team-ups between David Ayer and Jason Statham.

A Working Man’ may contain literally every clichè under the sun, but ‘A Working Man’ doesn’t shy away from its absurdity and has fun with its simple plot and formula. The template is simple, give Jason Statham a job title, Beekeeper, Mechanic etc. Give him an estranged daughter, a military background and a network of criminals he needs to hunt down, and you have a movie! David Ayer and Statham have a good thing going, I look forward to seeing them work together more, as they have a great understanding of what makes these films work. It’s over-the-top, it’s silly, but it’s always fun. Be sure to secure your copy by pre-ordering ‘A Working Man’ on DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K Ultra HD today from Sanity, you won’t want to miss it!
